How to Get Dad (or the Reluctant Partner) Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Family photo sessions often bring up a common challenge: one partner (usually Dad, but not always!) may feel a little hesitant about being in front of the camera. Whether it’s nerves, feeling awkward, or just not loving the idea of taking photos, this reluctance can add some tension to what should be a fun experience.
The good news? With a little preparation and the right approach, even the most camera-shy partner can feel comfortable and enjoy the session. Here’s how we can make it happen.
1. Keep It Relaxed and Fun
Many people feel uncomfortable with stiff poses or being told to "act natural." That’s why my sessions are designed to be relaxed, easygoing, and free of forced smiles or awkward instructions.
Instead of posing, we’ll focus on capturing natural interactions—playing with the kids, holding the baby, or simply enjoying quiet moments together. These organic activities take the pressure off and let personalities shine.
2. Focus on What Matters Most
A great way to ease nerves is to shift the focus away from the camera and toward what truly matters: your family.
I encourage reluctant partners to focus on their kids or their connection with their spouse during the session. Whether it’s snuggling with the baby or chasing the kids around the backyard, these moments create photos that feel authentic and meaningful.
3. Avoid Overwhelming Them
Too much planning or too many instructions can make a reluctant partner feel overwhelmed before the session even begins. That’s why I keep the preparation process simple.
We’ll discuss wardrobe options and activities that feel natural for your family, so everything flows easily on the day of the session. The result? A laid-back experience that feels more like family time than a photoshoot.
4. Involve Them in the Process
Sometimes, inviting them to be part of the planning can help. Whether it’s picking a favorite spot in the house or suggesting an activity they enjoy doing with the kids, their input can make them feel more comfortable and engaged.
5. Let Me Do the Work
As a photographer, my job is to make everyone feel at ease—including the most reluctant family members. I’ll guide the session in a way that feels natural, find the best light and angles, and make sure everyone looks and feels great without the stress.
Why It’s Worth It
At the end of the day, these photos aren’t just for you—they’re for your kids. Years from now, they’ll love looking back at these images and seeing the love, laughter, and connection that made up their childhood.
Encouraging a reluctant partner to focus on the bigger picture (pun intended) often helps them feel more willing to participate.
